People,
every year now
for the last 4 years Ogden Utah's Historic 25th Street Association has
organized what we all have come to know as the annual "Harvest Moon"
Celebration. This year the committee, with the help of some folks from
Key Bank, decided that they were gonna turn the heat up on this
years Harvest Moon, maybe even turn ole 25th Street into
Bourbon Street
for just an evening--so these good folks went out and booked
themselves
a genuine 100% authentic Zydeco Band from New Orleans -( yes there are
Zydeco bands from Jersey- and yes they sound like they're
from Jersey).
This people, however, is not just any ole Zydeco band, this band
here
is none other than DWAYNE DOPSIE, son of the
Legendary Louisiana Legend Rockin Dopsie from
Rockin Dopsie and the Zydeco Twisters.
I know that not many Utahans are too up on the Zydeco scene- but lemme
tell you folks- this man comes from Zydeco Royalty! Not only that, but
this man comes with a resume bigger than an Alligator straight out
of
the Mississippi river- No Jive, look for yourself.

months online. Dwayne Dopsie & The Zydeco Hellraisers, have
performed not only coast to coast of the USA, but also internationally.
They have been a featured act of the prestigious New Orleans' Jazz
& Heritage Festival yearly since 2000. Dwayne Dopsie & The
Zydeco Hellraisers were headliners at the Syracuse Blues Festival in
2001 & 2002.

Well since
this
wonderful Idea was hatched to bring New Orleans to 25th
Street- A
NATIONAL TRAGEDY struck the Gulf Coast, I'm talking about
Hurricane
Katrina- which all of us should be aware of by now. I had no idea
until
I started reading the interview with Dwayne (which has been included
below) that this man lived along the Levee of Lake Pontchartrain-
literally the epicenter of New Orleans destruction. Folks to
put it simply all this man has left is his Accordion, His Band, and his
Zydeco Music. HE HAS LOST EVERYTHING ELSE IN HIS LIFE -EVERYTHING,
but people, as I'm sure you all know music is medicine- don't think
it's a coincidence that they got Music in Church folks- Jesus, just
like the Blues Man, knows that music can heal the soul.
Dwayne, before
this tragedy struck was booked to tour this way out west ( with a
Notable slot at the highly acclaimed TELLURIDE BLUES AND BREWS
FESTIVAL--)
Rather than sit around and feel sorry for himself this man is grabbing
the Bull by the Horns and is getting himself a Van and is making sure
that by God "The Show Must Go Own". However
what was originally booked to be a One night event has blossomed into a
3 day event featuring Mr. Dopsie Friday, Saturday, and Sunday Night at
Brewskis with his original performance at the Harvest Moon Celebration
early Saturday evening. People the
tragedy which has befallen Dwayne has now become your opportunity,
never in my lifetime can I remember a Three Day
Zydeco party in Utah- not only that folks ....IT'S IN OGDEN.
People, if Katrina has given you the Blues and you feel like doing
something to help the SURVIVORS of Hurricane Katrina- then get
your Butt down to the Harvest Moon Celebration( A FREE, ALL
DAY EVENT
FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY) as well as one of these extended gigs- and
LITERALLY SHAKE IT, (put some money in those pockets as well folks
because as I'm sure you guessed, there's gonna be a bucket passed
around with the name SURVIVORS written on it) Give this man an audience
the likes of he's never seen folks, and see a part of the cultural
heritage that is not only native to New Orleans, but is a part of all
of our American Heritage.

INTERNATIONAL
RECORDING ARTIST
HARPER
DOWN UNDA
BLUESMAN
Though
Harper is a well known name in Australia, his debut recording under a
new association with Blind Pig Records will be a revelation to music
lovers across America. The ten originals on Down to The Rhythm
exhibit the virtuoso harmonica performances, distinctive
instrumentation, instantly memorable songs, and deeply soulful groove
that Harper is so well known for Down Under.
Imagine
a singer with the deep soul of Motown, a harmonica player who can graft
Sonny Boy II and Little Walter with Sugar Blue, a songwriter who tells
his own compelling stories in an unhurried, J.J. Cale-like manner, and
a musical visionary who is unafraid to mix the didgeridoo, an important
part of his Australian indigenous culture, with infectious modern
percussive rhythms, and you have a glimpse of what Harper is about.
Harper
is fast becoming one of the Australia's great musical exports. Recently
in his homeland, Harper was awarded the Male Vocalist of the Year and
Song of the Year for "I Swear I'm Innocent" by the 2004 Australian
Blues Awards. He also received a TREV Award from college campuses as
the Acoustic Artist of the Year.
But
Harper is no new kid on the musical stage. He's spent a lifetime
discovering the sound that defines who he is. "From the start, I didn't
want to sound like anyone else," says Harper. "Both vocally and with my
harp, I would learn how to do what other players did and then put my
own slant on it. It's hard to pin down exactly when my style emerged. I
can only say it was a gradual development and not something that I was
aware of."
That
sound is one part harmonica virtuoso, one part rhythmic explorer. Where
earlier harmonica players like Little Walter emulated horn players,
Harper looks to the guitarists. He thinks of his harp lines in terms of
licks, riffs, and rhythm. "I like to use melody to create emotion and
strong rhythmic vamps like drumming to build excitement. I also try to
play my instrument in the context of the song. I only play fast when it
suits the song. I like playing electrically as well as acoustically and
again it depends on what suits the song best. Subtlety is just as
important as clever technique."
